A conservative journalist was violently assaulted multiple times during a Minneapolis protest Saturday, prompting both local charges and a federal FBI investigation into the attack that left the reporter injured and shaken.
Multiple Attackers Target Reporter at Immigration Protest
Savanah Hernandez, a contributor with Turning Point USA, documented her own assault outside the Whipple Federal Building during a Saturday demonstration. Video footage shows protesters initially yelling and blowing whistles at Hernandez before a woman began throwing punches, knocking the journalist to the ground. Despite bystanders attempting to calm the situation, a male protester approached from behind and shoved Hernandez to the pavement a second time. After she stood up, another physical altercation forced her down again before good Samaritans finally helped her reach safety.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed four individuals will face charges connected to the protest. Three suspects will be charged for assaulting both Hernandez and a deputy, while a fourth faces gross misdemeanor obstruction charges for using force against law enforcement. The building houses Minnesota’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office and detention facility, which drew protesters to the location.
This is now the second time I have been mobbed and assaulted for filming a protest on U.S. streets.
Today these Minneapolis protesters were chanting that they were “ANTIFA” and proved it, by mobbing and beating me for reporting on a public protest: pic.twitter.com/EOhyg9AFME

Federal Investigation Escalates Local Case
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon confirmed Sunday that the FBI opened a federal criminal investigation into the attack, though the exact nature of the federal probe remains undisclosed. The dual-track prosecution represents a significant escalation beyond typical assault charges. Hernandez reported waking Sunday with headache and neck stiffness from being repeatedly tackled onto concrete. She stated the male attacker required five men to restrain him as he continued attempting to reach her, despite never having spoken to him during the demonstration.
Attorney Involvement Brings Federal Attention
Hernandez credited attorney Mike Davis with the Article III Project for helping elevate the incident to federal authorities. The journalist described the male suspect repeatedly calling her derogatory names throughout the day and appearing intent on causing more severe injuries. She identified the man as attacking alongside his wife and daughter, though news organizations have not released names pending formal charging. The combination of documented video evidence, law enforcement victims, and potential First Amendment implications likely contributed to federal investigative interest in what initially appeared as a local assault case.

Could it be time for some street justice? These ‘peaceful’ protests become more violent every week and someone will get killed.
