Socialist Sweep Stuns NYC

Democratic socialists just swept three New York City congressional primaries — and the socialist machine behind it is now setting its sights on the rest of the country.

Story Snapshot

  • All three candidates backed by NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) won their congressional primaries on Tuesday.
  • Two sitting incumbents were knocked out, including a five-term congressman who chaired the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
  • The DSA mobilized 50,000 volunteers to power Mamdani’s political machine — and it is now expanding that operation beyond New York.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson warned of “mini Zohrans” popping up across the country as the socialist wave grows.

A Clean Sweep for the Socialist Left

Three Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-backed candidates won their New York City congressional primaries Tuesday. Brad Lander defeated sitting Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. Claire Valdez won the open 7th District seat. Darializa Avila Chevalier upset five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. Espaillat chaired the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and was the first Dominican American elected to Congress. All three districts lean heavily Democratic, making their November wins very likely. [1]

This was not a close call. Chevalier beat Espaillat roughly 49% to 46%. Lander won his race by about 20 points. The left-wing media celebrated it as a “DSA sweep in literally the backyard of the Democratic leadership.” These are sitting members of Congress — gone. Replaced by candidates who openly embrace democratic socialism and were hand-picked by New York City’s socialist mayor. [2]

The Machine Behind the Wins

The DSA did not win these races by accident. The group’s New York City chapter built a massive ground operation that knocked on over 1.6 million doors for Mamdani’s mayoral run alone. That same machine powered Tuesday’s sweep. The DSA recruited 50,000 volunteers and targeted three specific voter groups: left-wing activists, residents of rent-stabilized apartments, and the Muslim community. [3] This is organized, disciplined, and growing.

Mamdani himself originally ran for mayor not expecting to win — the real goal was to build the DSA’s organizing power in New York City. [13] That strategy worked far beyond what anyone predicted. He crushed former Gov. Andrew Cuomo by 12 points in the Democratic mayoral primary, winning nearly half a million first-choice votes. Now he is mayor, and his political machine is electing allies to Congress. The DSA’s membership has grown to over 100,000 nationwide. [15]

What This Means Beyond New York

Tuesday’s results are not just a New York story. The DSA also won seven of eight state legislative primaries the same night, putting it on track to go from nine members in Albany to fourteen. [14] In Washington, D.C., a DSA-aligned candidate won the mayoral primary. In Los Angeles, another DSA member advanced to a mayoral runoff. [15] The socialist left is building real power in major American cities — and they plan to keep going.

House Speaker Mike Johnson responded Wednesday, joking about “mini Zohrans” popping up everywhere. But it is no joke. The DSA is methodically replacing mainstream Democrats with hard-left socialists in safe blue districts. These new members will push rent freezes, tax hikes, and far-left economic policies from inside Congress. For conservatives, the takeaway is clear: the Democratic Party’s establishment is losing control, and what is replacing it is further left than anything voters have seen in decades. Americans outside New York’s blue bubbles should pay close attention to where this movement goes next.
