Federal authorities apprehended a high school teacher and an illegal immigrant involved in a gun-buying conspiracy. This incident raised concerns among millions of Americans who are already worried about the open border situation, especially in light of recent terrorist activities in Israel.
The illegal immigrant, previously deported, managed to re-enter the country undetected. Identified as Conroy Samuels, a Jamaican national with a 2003 conviction for attempted murder, he was found distributing firearms illegally procured by DeAndre Cannon, a high school teacher and basketball coach.

Cannon, aged 34, made straw purchases of nearly four dozen guns in Georgia over a span of four months in 2022. These firearms were then handed off to Samuels, who distributed them further.
Two of these weapons were later used in multiple shootings in Connecticut, highlighting the grave consequences of such illicit activities.
Federal agents had been monitoring the entire operation closely before moving in to arrest both individuals. Unfortunately, during one of these illegal transactions, Cannon left his dog in a hot car for an hour and a half, leading to its tragic death.
The Department of Justice has announced multi-year sentences for both culprits. This case underscores the fact that neither illegal immigrants nor felons are generally allowed to purchase or possess firearms, necessitating the involvement of individuals like Cannon in such operations.

U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan emphasized the danger posed by firearms traffickers, stating, “Firearms traffickers fuel gun violence in our communities placing citizens at risk of injury and death.”
He further pledged commitment to partnering with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to pursue and prosecute criminals contributing to the illegal flow of guns onto our streets.
ATF Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones echoed these sentiments, expressing satisfaction with the success of the operation but also highlighting the persistent problem of illegal firearms trafficking. She affirmed ATF’s continued commitment to work alongside federal, state, and local partners in reducing gun crime.
