Democrat Called Jesus “Zombie” — Campaign IMPLODING…

A Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Maine who already weathered scandals over a Nazi-linked tattoo and inflammatory social media posts now faces renewed scrutiny after a 2012 Reddit comment surfaced where he mocked Jesus Christ as a “zombie” and the Virgin Mary as “a skank.”

When Past Digital Footprints Become Present Political Landmines

Graham Platner’s path to Maine’s Democratic Senate nomination has transformed into a cautionary tale about digital permanence. The oyster farmer and military veteran saw his candidacy upended when researchers unearthed a 2012 Reddit post from the now-deleted account “P-Hustle,” verified through archived records. In the comment, Platner discussed his infantry years, writing about “zombie jesus jokes and Mary sucking at covering up being a skank” as examples of his “crudely atheist” humor during military service. Conservative strategist Greg Price surfaced the post on April 2, timing that Republicans seized upon given its proximity to Easter celebrations.

The crude religious mockery represents just the latest scandal to plague Platner’s campaign. Earlier revelations exposed his self-described communist sympathies, characterizations of rural white Americans as racist, anti-police rhetoric labeling officers “bastards,” and disturbing jokes about rape that advised women to “act like an adult.” Each discovery chipped away at his initial polling strength in a primary race he once led. His October 2025 apology attempted damage control, attributing the comments to post-Afghanistan “disillusionment,” but the steady drip of controversies suggests a pattern rather than isolated lapses in judgment.

The Totenkopf Tattoo That Changed Everything

The most damaging revelation involved a chest tattoo featuring the Totenkopf, the skull and crossbones symbol infamously worn by SS concentration camp guards during World War II. The exposure prompted immediate campaign staff departures and forced Platner to cover the tattoo. His defense that the symbol held different military meanings rang hollow to many voters, particularly given Maine’s significant veteran population who understand military insignia distinctions. The combination of Nazi imagery with communist sympathies and crude atheism created a trifecta of disqualifying characteristics for a candidate seeking to represent a politically moderate state.

Maine’s religious demographics make Platner’s anti-Christian comments particularly toxic. Catholics alone constitute roughly 22 percent of the state’s population, with broader Christian adherents forming a clear majority. The National Rifle Association’s Justin Davis noted that 100 percent of Maine voters would reject calling the Virgin Mary “a skank,” underscoring the universal revulsion such language provokes regardless of personal faith. Gov. Janet Mills recognized this vulnerability, airing television advertisements in March highlighting Platner’s rape-related comments to Democratic primary voters already questioning his fitness for office.

The Veteran Excuse Wears Thin

Platner’s explanation that eight years of infantry service in the Marine Corps and Army created a coarse, disillusioned worldview deserves examination. Military service undeniably exposes individuals to trauma and can foster dark humor as a coping mechanism. Many veterans adopt irreverent attitudes toward authority and tradition after experiencing combat’s harsh realities. However, the breadth and pattern of Platner’s offensive statements spanning multiple years and topics suggests something beyond typical veteran gallows humor. His comments targeted Christians, women, police, and rural Americans with consistent contempt rather than occasional edginess.

The 2012 Reddit post specifically referenced a 2008 lawsuit by atheist soldier Jeremy Hall, who alleged religious discrimination in the military. Platner’s comment defended crude atheist expression in military ranks, positioning his mockery as pushback against religious pressure. Yet his chosen examples crossed from defending non-belief into active derision of others’ sacred figures. There exists considerable difference between asserting atheism and calling Jesus a zombie or Mary a prostitute. The former represents legitimate viewpoint diversity; the latter constitutes gratuitous insult designed to offend rather than enlighten.

Political Implications for Maine Democrats

The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s April 2 statement captured the growing Republican glee at Platner’s implosion: “Just when you think Graham Platner can’t get any worse.” The NRSC recognizes that Democratic divisions benefit Republican chances in the general election, whether Platner limps to a damaged primary victory or Mills emerges after a bruising contest. Democrats who initially overlooked Platner’s outsider profile now confront the reality that opposition research typically reserved for general elections has devastated their primary field. Mills has proven willing to go negative, signaling Democratic establishment alarm at the prospect of Platner as their nominee.

Platner’s continued town hall meetings and refusal to withdraw suggest either admirable persistence or stubborn denial of political reality. His campaign’s silence following the anti-Christian post’s emergence speaks volumes. No rapid response team countered the narrative, no surrogate defenders emerged, and no new apology addressed the specific offense. The organizational collapse following the tattoo revelation apparently extended to basic communications capacity, leaving Platner isolated as Republicans and his Democratic opponent alike pile on accumulated scandals. The June 9 primary looms as potential referendum on whether past statements should disqualify candidates or whether apologies and explanations suffice.

  1. No matter what you may think or believe, calling Jesus a ‘zombie’ and Mother Mary a ‘skank’ may get a few Leftist votes but the majority of Americans will kick you to the curb.
