Joe Biden recently chose to commemorate what would have been George Floyd’s 50th birthday. This decision comes at a time when the nation is grappling with significant issues such as border control, terrorism, and law and order.

The question arises: why is the president focusing on honoring Floyd, a man with a criminal past, instead of addressing these pressing matters?

Biden’s decision to honor Floyd’s birthday is seen by many as an act of pandering, seemingly at the expense of police across the country.

In a statement posted on the White House website, Biden stated that Floyd should be alive and celebrating his 50th birthday with his family and friends. He went on to say Floyd’s death sparked one of the largest civil rights movements in our nation’s history and inspired the world.

However, this perspective is not universally shared. Many view Floyd’s death as tragic, but argue it does not warrant the glorification of his life. They contend that labeling the ensuing riots and looting as a civil rights movement is a gross misrepresentation.

Furthermore, they question the appropriateness of Biden using race to criticize the justice system while he and his son face their own legal controversies.

Following his tribute to Floyd, Biden shifted focus to politics, bringing up the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.” This act bans chokeholds, restricts no-knock warrants, establishes a database for police misconduct, and directs other measures to advance effective and accountable policing.

While these reforms may sound promising, critics argue that they undermine the authority of law enforcement and could potentially compromise public safety.

Biden also took a shot at Congress, stating implementing real and lasting change at the state and local levels requires congressional action. He pledged to do everything in his power to fight for police accountability and urged Congress to pass meaningful police reform.

In his concluding remarks, Biden stated Floyd’s memory reminds us there is more work to do to redeem the soul of America. He called for a recommitment to changing hearts and minds while enacting policies and laws that ensure equality.

However, critics argue that associating Floyd with the “soul of America” is a misguided notion that does not resonate with many Americans.

While Biden’s decision to honor George Floyd’s birthday may appeal to leftists, it also sparked controversy and debate. It raises questions about his priorities as president and his approach to addressing the pressing issues facing our nation.
