The Pentagon reported Monday that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered approximately 8,500 US service members on high alert for possible deployment to Eastern Europe.
War is Coming
The announcement comes as NATO considers whether or not to activate its response force in order to thwart a military takeover of Ukraine. This is something the West worries is imminent.
Austin “increased our preparedness to supply forces if NATO needs to deploy the [NATO Response Force] so other circumstances emerge,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said at a media briefing.
“Specifically, this will guarantee the US and our contribution to the [NRF] are appropriate with their preparation for fast deployment, should it be activated,” Kirby added.
Kirby said the US “would be in a state to quickly deploy several more brigade combat groups, logistics, medical, intelligence, aircraft surveillance, recon, logistics, and additional forces into Europe.”

That’s if NATO deploys the rapid response force, or if the security situation “deteriorates.”
The Pentagon’s statement follows after the New York Times claimed on Sunday President Biden was contemplating sending tens of thousands of US troops, as well as destroyers and planes, to NATO partners in the Baltic States and East Europe.
In reaction to Russia’s continuous troop deployment along Ukraine’s border, NATO said earlier Monday that European partners were deploying extra ships and fighter planes to Eastern Europe and placing new personnel on standby.
Austin “will need to consult” alongside Biden, Kirby added at his news conference. Meanwhile, the US “will continue tight collaboration with friends and allies, as we regularly review our military position and make choices regarding deployment of forces into and throughout Europe.”
Biden Has Been on the Phone
Simultaneously, Biden convened a secure remote conversation with the presidents of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
This was done in the briefing room at the White House to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The call included the secretary-general of NATO, as well as the leaders of the European Union and the European Council.

The majority of them are meant for the NATO Reaction Force, according to Kirby, of the roughly 8,500 U.S.-based people who Austin put on heightened alert. However, Austin wants the U.S. “to be prepared for any other scenarios, as well.”
Kirby said he couldn’t give a breakdown of how many troops would contribute or add to the NATO rapid response force and how many would come from the US alone. He stated it really varies depending on the need amongst America’s allied forces.
The fate of the modern world now sits on the shoulders of Joe Biden and how well he can negotiate. Should he fail to prevent a Russian invasion of Ukraine, this will be his biggest failure as president, even topping the withdrawal from Afghanistan
