President Donald Trump just proclaimed two new national commemorative holidays to honor U.S. victories in World War I and World War II. But unlike typical federal holidays, there’s no paid time off coming your way. Trump made it clear: this is about honoring America’s greatness—not closing up shop.
Trump Announces Victory Days Without Shutting Down the Country
From his Truth Social account, President Trump declared November 11 and May 8 as national commemorative days to mark America’s role in winning WWI and WWII. November 11 is already recognized as Veterans Day, and May 8 is celebrated worldwide as Victory in Europe (VE) Day—but until now, the U.S. never had a dedicated holiday for either Allied victory.
“All over the World, the Allies are celebrating the Victory we had in World War II,” Trump said. “The only Country that doesn’t celebrate is the United States of America, and the Victory was only accomplished because of us.” The bold statement reflects Trump’s ongoing push to restore patriotic pride in America’s military legacy.

Trump made it crystal clear that these commemorative days will not be treated as federal holidays: “We already have too many Holidays in America—There are not enough days left in the year,” he said. In other words, patriotism doesn’t mean stopping the engine of American productivity.
Unlike federal holidays, commemorative days don’t require employers to offer paid leave, and government offices will remain open. It’s a uniquely Trump-style compromise—honor the past, but keep the economy moving.
Veterans Day Stays Put After Pushback
Trump’s team originally floated the idea of renaming Veterans Day to honor the WWI victory. But after swift backlash from veterans’ groups, that idea was dropped.
Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, clarified: “We are not renaming Veterans Day. It will just be an additional proclamation that goes out on that day.” Veterans groups like the V.F.W. emphasized that Veterans Day is about honoring all service members, not just one war.
Trump’s adjustment shows his willingness to listen to veterans while still pushing forward with new patriotic recognition.
