As Americans know, the 2020 presidential election is getting closer and closer. However, with the passing of time comes some progressive concerns that the Democrat establishment is moving to systemically ice out Bernie Sanders, as documented by Fox News. This would mirror the actions of the Democrat National Committee during the last presidential election throughout the primary season.
At this time, Sanders is currently trailing behind current frontrunner Joe Biden in the polls amongst Democrat voters.
Why are Progressives Nervous about the DNC?
Put simply, the current positioning of Sanders versus Biden is a cause for concern amongst progressives. While Sanders may be in second place, Biden’s double-digit lead is still a matter which worries progressives who want to see a Sanders nomination. Furthermore, progressives believe that the Democrat establishment may be purposefully pushing Biden to be their nominee, behind the scenes.
Occupy DNC founder and Sanders backer Laurie Cestnick explained more about this concern amongst progressives:
“The mainstream media and the DNC are colluding against the American people. That’s what it feels like. It’s the same thing all over again.”

Why Progressives Might be Right to Worry
If history has proven one thing, it’s that the Democrat establishment does not seem to be a fan of Bernie Sanders. We saw this last presidential election season when Hillary Clinton was given superdelegates and Democrats colluded against Sanders behind the scenes. We may be seeing this same dynamic play out again as Biden leads in the polls, despite facing backlash from various progressive groups which are likely to support Sanders.
At the end of the day, there is certainly a tug-of-war between the Democrat establishment (which is likelier to favor a candidate like Joe Biden) and progressives which are overwhelmingly pro-Sanders. Only time will tell; however, it will be interesting to see which Democrat manages to secure their party’s nomination and lose to President Trump in the general election!
