It seems as though Democrats can never escape the black cloud of corruption which always seems to have about their heads.
House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could possibly be facing up to five years in prison for seedy behavior involving a political PAC during her congressional campaign, according to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Everything You Need to Know
In December 2017, Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign team managed to gain the majority control of the Justice Democrats PAC. This may seem OK in and of itself, but there’s just one problem: if it turns out that Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign worked closely with the PAC, that could open her up to serious reporting violations. The PAC raised more than $1.8 million dollars prior to Ocasio-Cortez’s primary which took place in June 2018.
Hans von Spakovsky, the former GOP Federal Election Commissioner, provided additional details about the nefariousness behind failing to separate from the PAC:
“If the facts as alleged are true, and a candidate had control over a PAC that was working to get that candidate elected, then that candidate is potentially in very big trouble and may have engaged in multiple violations of federal campaign finance law, including receiving excessive contributions.”
In a nutshell, if Ocasio-Cortez received more than $2,700 in a single contribution to her campaign or the PAC, then that would qualify as an “excessive contribution.” Of course, excessive campaign contributions definitely classify as campaign finance violations.
One of the most interesting things of all is that Ocasio-Cortez, like other Democrats, has been one of the loudest critics about President Trump and his alleged campaign finance violations. Yet despite nearly two years of an ongoing investigation headed by Robert Mueller, the president has never been found guilty of collusion, campaign finance violations, etc. However, it appears as though Ocasio-Cortez cannot say the same.
It will be fascinating to see whether or not the United States government opens any probes into her conduct prior to becoming a congresswoman.
