On Monday, House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke out about her opinions on the United States government’s management of various communities.
According to The Daily Caller News Foundation, Ocasio-Cortez discussed the various “struggles” experienced by different populations and moreover proposed that reparations ought to be paid to communities which were adversely affected by America’s New Deal.
A Closer Look at Ocasio-Cortez’s Statements
During an interview, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez shared the following statements:
“I think the first thing that we need to do is realize that there’s a balance between this more universal struggle for racial, social and economic dignity, but at the same time, not erasing the individual stories of different communities.”
The House Democrat furthermore claimed that the New Deal has done “damage” to non-white communities.
“Economically speaking, reparations are for the damage done by the New Deal and redlining because that is where we saw a compounding of the existing inequity from the legacy of slavery, where we drew red lines around black communities.”
Finally, Ocasio-Cortez noted that Germany went through the “truth-telling” process of paying reparations before urging America to “tell the truth about itself” in order to “heal.”

The remarks from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone who has been paying attention. The congresswoman frequently makes the news for making shocking and often stupid statements. Ocasio-Cortez is a self-professed Democratic-socialist and endorses taxing wealthy Americans at 70%. Most recently, she also came under fire for claiming that only an “immoral” system allows individuals to achieve billionaire status.
