House Democrats Are Pushing To Lower Voting Age To 16

When Democrats regained the majority in the House of Representatives, many Americans predicted that their return to power would result in pushes for legislation which may be viewed as extreme.

It turns out that people with these concerns were not wrong. Earlier this week, House Democrats voted on legislation which would lower the federal voting age from 18 to 16. While 125 Democrats supported this initiative, only one Republican voted alongside them, according to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Push to Lower the Voting Age

The legislation was initiated by Rep. Ayanna Pressley. Apparently, Pressley believed that 16-year-olds are championing causes which Democrats favor, hence her push to lower the federal voting age.

In Pressley’s own words:

“Young people are at the forefront of some of our most existential crises.¬†The time has come. Our young people deserve to have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.”

Thankfully, Pressley’s amendment did not yield success, seeing as the House ultimately rejected the bill, due to a lack of appropriate votes. However, Americans should not become complacent simply because the Democrats lost this round. The reasoning which Pressley gave speaks volumes about the Democrats and where their party stands.

The Real Reason Behind the Push to Lower the Voting Age

The fact of the matter is this: Rep. Ayanna Pressley and the other House Democrats who proposed to lower the voting age did so because they believe doing so will serve as a political advantage. Democrats want to remain in power and they believe that allowing 16-year-olds to vote will help them preserve their power.

While there are absolutely some self-aware and mature 16-year-olds in this country, the majority are not self-aware and not mature enough to be making decisions which will impact the nation as a whole. This is not an attack on young Americans, this is simply acknowledging reality.

If the same young people which Pressley claims to love so much were championing for conservative reform, it’s extremely unlikely that she would have proposed legislation to lower the federal voting age.
