Federal Arrest: Shocking Plot Against Minnesota Lawmakers Uncovered

Federal prosecutors have charged Vance Boelter in a brutal plot that left one state lawmaker and her husband dead, and another senator and his wife wounded. As the nation grapples with rising political violence, the case could force sweeping new security measures to protect public servants.

Meticulously Planned Political Assassinations

Vance Boelter, 57, from Green Isle, Minnesota, has been charged with six federal crimes following what authorities describe as a calculated political assassination targeting multiple Minnesota lawmakers. The charges include two counts each of stalking, murder, and using a firearm in the commission of violent crimes, offenses which could potentially result in the death penalty.

Federal investigators revealed that Boelter disguised himself as a police officer and used a police-style SUV to gain access to his victims’ homes on the night of the attacks. He allegedly killed Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, while seriously wounding Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette after they became suspicious of his false police credentials.

Extensive Surveillance and Meticulous Planning

Court documents reveal Boelter conducted extensive research on his targets, using websites to gather personal information on legislators and purchasing materials to create fake police identifiers. His deception included approaching victims’ homes and claiming there was a shooting inside, a tactic that worked until the Hoffmans realized he wasn’t a genuine officer.

Authorities discovered that Boelter had attempted to visit another legislator’s home in Maple Grove that same night, but they were fortunately out of town. The evidence of premeditation included notebooks with detailed information about multiple government officials, disguises, and fake license plates found at Boelter’s residence following his arrest.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

After evading law enforcement for 43 hours, Boelter was finally apprehended in a field in Sibley County near his rural home. He made his first appearance in U.S. District Court, where a federal defender was appointed to represent him, with bail set at $5 million.

The Hennepin County Attorney has announced plans to pursue first-degree state murder charges against Boelter in addition to the federal charges. Boelter’s next hearing is scheduled for June 27, as both federal and state authorities continue building their cases against the alleged assassin.
