On Wednesday, House Democrats Anthony Brown and Brian Fitzpatrick put forth the ‘Raise the Age’ Act. In essence, this bill would alter the age in which Americans can lawfully purchase a rifle; the current mandate of 18 years of age would be increased to 21 years of age. However, the one exception would be for active military members and individuals who require firearms for work purposes.
A Closer Look at the ‘Raise the Age’ Act
Democratic representatives put forth the ‘Raise the Age’ Act in order to combat violence committed by guns. Despite pushback, Democrats have regularly maintained that more gun laws will crack down on gun violence. In theory, this sounds good; in reality, it’s senseless and wasteful because criminals do not follow gun control laws, nor have they ever. This is why they maintain their status as criminals.
Nevertheless, Brown issued the following statement to explain and garner support for the aforementioned legislation:
“We have not done enough to tackle the epidemic of gun violence Americans experience on our streets, in our movie theatres, and at our schools. There is bipartisan support in Congress for common-sense laws that deter would-be perpetrators of gun violence from doing harm to our communities. Currently, an 18-year-old who cannot legally purchase a handgun can legally purchase a military-style assault weapon — that’s a dangerous, outdated loophole in America’s gun laws. I am proud to work with Congressman Fitzpatrick to introduce this important first step to stem the violence we see across our country.”
Fitzpatrick also offered his own endorsement. The Democratic representative maintains that increasing age restrictions will serve as a “common-sense measure.” Interestingly enough, neither Brown nor Fitzpatrick views the ‘Raise The Act’ Act as hostile to the Second Amendment; instead, both Democrats maintain that the legislation will “protect our children and keep our communities safe.” Again, this is in spite of the fact that criminals don’t follow gun control laws.
Gun Control Laws
It’s unfortunate that the left continues to act as if gun control is effective and meaningful. The only objective which gun control achieves is the disarming of law-abiding citizens. Criminals who really want to secure firearms will do so via illegal means, such as theft, the black market, etc. Still, Democrats keep pretending as though their bills are not simply trampling on the rights on lawful Americans.
When we get to a point where the gun control laws are so austere that only criminals have guns, then we will be in serious trouble. It is absolutely imperative that the people of this great nation maintain the right to keep and bear arms. Sadly, the “progressive” left is progressively chipping away at this nation’s Second Amendment rights with each piece of absurd anti-gun legislation.
