Former CNN host Jim Acosta has crossed a disturbing new line by conducting an “interview” with an AI-generated avatar of a deceased Parkland shooting victim to push gun control policies, raising serious questions about media ethics and the exploitation of tragedy for political gain.
Acosta’s Controversial Digital Interview
Jim Acosta published the AI interview on his Substack platform, featuring a digitally animated version of Joaquin Oliver answering questions about gun violence and sharing personal anecdotes. The timing coincided with Oliver’s birthday, maximizing emotional impact while promoting legislative action on gun control. The AI avatar delivered messages calling for stronger gun laws, mental health support, and community engagement, effectively serving as a digital spokesperson for the gun control movement.
Parents’ Advocacy Through AI Technology
Manuel and Patricia Oliver created their son’s AI likeness in 2024 as part of their ongoing activism following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that claimed 17 lives. The digital avatar has been used to deliver messages to lawmakers and the public, criticizing congressional inaction on gun violence prevention. This technological approach represents their attempt to amplify advocacy efforts by keeping their son’s voice alive in the political debate.
Ethical Concerns About Digital Exploitation
The use of AI avatars of deceased individuals in political advocacy and journalism raises unprecedented ethical questions about consent, authenticity, and emotional manipulation. While AI technology has previously recreated celebrities’ voices or likenesses, its application in sensitive political contexts involving tragedy victims marks new territory. Critics argue this practice exploits grief for political purposes, while supporters view it as innovative activism that could influence public opinion and legislative action.
Broader Implications for Media and Politics
This development may establish a concerning precedent for using AI avatars in political campaigns and advocacy, potentially accelerating adoption while raising demands for ethical oversight. The intersection of artificial intelligence, media ethics, and political messaging creates new challenges for determining appropriate boundaries in journalism and activism. As AI technology advances, society must grapple with questions about digital resurrection’s role in public discourse and the potential for emotional manipulation through technological means.

I really cannot stand the gun grabbing liberals who think taking away guns is going to stop violent crime. It’s an asinine assumption. If it were really that simple consider this; let’s take all the forks away from everybody to end obesity. Let’s take the glasses away too so people will stop drinking. I don’t know of a single case in all of history where a gun committed a crime. Have you conveniently forgotten there has to be a person using the gun? Besides, if you were to take away the guns, it would be knives, swords, crossbows, Molotov cocktails, automobiles, name it, there are hundreds of other weapons that can be used to execute a violent crime. Get a life, stop the damned whining about guns, go out and get one for yourself and learn how to use it. YOU just may be the hero who stops a violent crime because of your gun!
